Some recommended features: include memorizing string placement, recording changes and publishing to the web, snap to grid (some way to incorporate a BPM with the grid? not sure how), multiple drop-points with different colored balls. change the drop-rate for each drop-point and changes over time, controllers would be amazing too (for example, the number of balls on screen can be used as a control to effect strings or drop-rate of other drop-points, string strikes, velocity, pitch, … could be used as a controller, …). There are so many possibilities! Add even a few of these features and it can be a Pro version that i can see people paying for.
BTW, I’m a developer and musician. I’d love to be involved with this if you can use any help implementing features.
Wonderful suggestions! Excuse the awful site, I’ve been pressed for time and I spent yesterday camping out for the iPad haha. I forgot to add to the planned additions that I have two-finger drag to change the gravity and air friction constants. I’m working towards making a pro version that can be used as an instrument. However, I’m stumped for snapping to BPM. All methods I’ve tried slow down gameplay from making calculations.
On the BPM thing, it might be enough to just have a flash of the BPMs at each strike-point on a string per ball while positioning a string and maybe allow the strings to snap to rounded-BMP when they’re close round numbers or preferring to snap BPMs to factors based on the drop-rate of the balls striking the string. In other words, a series of balls are going to strike a string at some BPM. The calculation will be a single calculation (per ball) passing through the string being created/moved. It wouldn’t have to be a constant, always-on thing. It’s only useful when positioning strings. Even so, with lots of balls traveling through it, it might still be too many calculations.
Some other thoughts along the different instrument-strings idea is weighted strings that effect pitch based on the length of the string. And about controllers, i’ve found it very useful to enable and disable strings at different intervals. For example, after, four strikes, allow four balls to pass through, then return to let four more strike the string, and so on. And yet another feature that is useful and relates to BMP would be a spinner. A few kinds would be fun. One that spins constantly at a particular rate, one that spins each time it’s struck and they could allow for deflecting the balls in random directions or at specific angles, …
Also, allow moving entire strings with multi-touch of both end-points instead of just moving a single end-point at a time with some feed-back that the string is selected.
Sorry to keep bombarding you with suggestions but i really love this app and the possibilities for it.
Some more ideas:
- An editing mode in which balls don’t animate and you only draw trajectories balls will take when striking a selected string. Essentially calculating the entire path a single ball will take and recalculating it as a string is moved.
- Along the colored balls idea, allow them to leave trails.
- And on the BPM thing, if balls are colorized per velocity, the same color can be used as a grid for BPMs and the grid can be adjusted by pinching. The BPM grid is exactly like the grid of a map. Zoom in and out to change the BPM snap of the grid.
- A simpler kind of snapping is really useful though. Horizontal and vertical. Probably just provide a means to start a string as only horz or vert and maybe a 45 degree.
Sound drop has incredible potential. Especially for recording sequences and creating loops to include an other programs like Looptastic and Jasunto Pro. I would love to see you include “Sonoma wire Works audio copy and paste”. This would allow the export of yours sound recordings into other apps. Also, the ability to save set up files so you could bring back at favorite setup would be a wonderful addition. To be able to record your files and, copy and paste them with Sonoma wire Works into Looptastic or Jasunto Pro and other ” audio copy and paste” applications, would provide a fantastic music creation tool that professionals would be willing to pay money for! Of course, being able to select different instrment sounds would also be fantastic!
Keep up the great work on an excellent App!
I’m addicted to downloading free apps, trying them, and then deleting them when I’m bored with them.
This app is not only a “keeper,” it’s on the first page of my apps, with Mail and Calendar.
I LOVE this app – it could entertain me for HOURS on end!!! HUGE Thumbs Up on this one; you ROCK!
Always looking for “mind-absorbing” sound and light apps, and this is BY FAR the best in that area… even ones that I’ve paid for! Love some of the ideas for a “Pro” version (which I’d definitely get,) but am completely thankful for what you’ve given away!! A+++++
This is so cool. It ranks as a fav with Bloom, Bebot and Magic Piano. I have to play with it more to get some ideas. Maybe line thickness tied to pitch. Different color lines to represent instruments?
Yes this is moving to page one! Now back to playing!
I would love to see some OSC out over wifi, to control things like synths and other gear. But that’s probably a pretty involved “addition”. Also any chance for open source? (or some sort of deal to work with the code?)
I love the way this generates such interesting rhythms: musically so complex and visually so minimalist; it looks like PONG which was the first ever computer game, I think: I remember it when I was a teenager. I started off thinking this was very simple and you had chanced on it by accident. Now I think there is a lot more going on that meets the eye (the ears give it away) and you are some sort of genius. I would love to be able to save rhythms. Even without watching them develop and collapse there is a lot going on. Wonderful! Brilliant!
You are a genius! Your app is fantastic! Thank you so much! It gives me the possibility to experience somo creativity also in the few minutes on the bus or on the train! I love it so much! Please give us the possibility to save the strings, and maybe to share it like in tunepad. Personally I also love the very essential design. Although many of the suggested add-ons would make it more interesting, I would still like to have the possibility to play with the present basic version. Congratulations again, it’s really a great idea!
Thanks for Soundrop!
It’s my favorite App Store app, I’ve played it more than any other application.
I have two requests;
Snap to grid – to allow setting up more precise patterns.
Unity gain for ball velocity option. Right now, the balls accelerate a little bit every time they hit a line. Eventually, they hit max acceleration. A way to set for no acceleration would let the patterns stay stable forever.
I really love Soundrop, it’s perfect for just messing around for a while, I can easily lose myself in it for hours!
My suggestion is you could have different sounds, such as african drums, or glass ‘tink’, maybe choose a different sound for each velocity.
I think Soundrop has amazing potential for the pro version and I will certainly be getting it as soon as it is released.
I also really love Soundrop, it is like a much more fluid version of something we worked on at the BBC called Drum Steps.
I’d say what would be interesting is different coloured balls for different instruments rather than just lines. That way could lie drum patterns and wired duos and the like with the same line structure in place.
Just started using / playing with Soundrop today and I love it.
Any possibility to implement multiple tuning systems? Not within one sketch, or set up … but to choose from in the options menu … equal temperament, just intonation, slendro (gamelan), etc …
@nicerobot, you took up all the original suggestions! Now I have to find ways to improve upon yours…
I’m going to have to say that my favorite of your ideas would be a way to adjust settings – a simple mode and an advanced mode, perhaps? Simple would be what it is now, advanced would allow access to the physics engine, let you mess with the numbers? Maybe use the accelerometer, have shaking the iPod/iPhone/iPad/iWhatever open the control panel style thing?
I am a Taoist Yogi Sensei, and have been teaching same for over 35yrs. This by far, is the most perfect tech replacement if ancient meditation sound devices – e.g. chimes, bells, bowls etc- ( not rain, wind, surf etc.). As -some say “keep it simple” but with a few refinements, this app could corner the meditation sound augment market very easily. Outstanding app!

Sounddrop is a great app! I love how moving the ball dropper slightly can completely change the composition. I really look forward to seeing what you put into Soundrop Pro. Here are a few ideas:
– ability to clear the screen of all lines
– ability to pause the action / reset the balls
– support landscape mode
– ability to move lines by dragging from middle of line
– incorporate color. one idea is to have the lines light up when struck, in a color corresponding to the pitch.
– ability to switch to different sounds would be very cool
– perhaps a way to adjust the overall pitch of the composition
– better way of moving the ball dropper. currently your finger obscures it so you can’t tell if you are moving it or precisely where you are dropping it
– ability to save / share compositions
– ability to manually or randomly perturb the board. the idea here is after you have a regular rhythm established with your composition, provide the ability through a button, or a shake, or randomly, to slightly alter how the next ball will bounce — just by a slight degree. this could send it off on a completely different path, temporarily layering a new sound on top of the established rhythm.
Your Soundrop app is no longer available.. what happened.. I have emailed itunes and they say there is no such app… I have a friend that has it and I’d love to get it..
thanks
the upgrade i paid for within the ipad version of your ‘universal’ app is *not* unlocking the iphone version, i expect you to tell me how this will be resolved – either update the app or send me an unlock or instructions (ps deleting then reinstalling after ipad sync does not work!)
please pm me
thoughts…
please get rid of that stupid sample, that’s childish and pointless !
allow sample import
your minimalist gui needs minimalist/appropriate menu bar – currently incongruous
allow much much much slower release, think bloom and couple with longer decay samples
at least have a preset which stores user selection samples to save setting (or loading) each time
the algorithm is currently glitchy in terms of bounce position and passthrough – ie needs to be tested more (may tie in with your rework)
does the selection of the menu need to kill the playback?
if you can track the finger taps already, have selecting a line – single tap (not a point) allow for reselecting colour(instrument)
if polyphony is problematic with longer decaying(releasing) samples then have a max ball count option
link velocity to dynamics at least in part – it’s very odd to have noisy balls (not moving) creating lots of dynamics lying along the bottom edge with grav on
Excellent app, have spent hours and hours on the free version, just found out about the upgrade and bought it immediatley, was not disappointed at all. Keep up the great work, and add some of the brilliant suggestions here, I would love to be able to save simple mp3 or wav files to use on the pc or mac
I absolutely love your game. It is one of my favorite apps! But i have a slight problem. I bought the upgraded version on the iPad and after multiple syncs the iphone version has not upgraded. Please contact me on how to fix this problem. And when can i expect the graphics be updated for the iphone 4?
If you go to upgrade on your iPhone it will not charge you a second time as long as you’re using the same iTunes account. It’s a flaw of Apple’s in-app purchase system.
Everything is drawn with core graphics so it should be fine on iPhone 4. The only thing I need to update is the logo which will be updated upon the next app update.
Hi. Love this app. You rock. Using my iphone for video, I made this piece of “music” with your app and bebot last week on a Saturday. Sounds best with speakers that can handle low end for the bebot bass :-)
I have had the Pro version for a few days now and play it everyday, but today when I opened it and loaded my Save, an ad appeared at the bottom about some crapy prayer. Is this a bug, or did I seriously just pay 2$ for an ad-supported app?
Total immersion, i will have to buy a second iphone so my son can get his soundrop time. I got the pro version which is a mega improvement… we “play” collectively adding or subtracting or tweaking a parameter… perhaps a multiplayer module..
on a more important note, i am real interested in using in this kind of tool as a controller for sound devices which we use for dance works… the visual aspect of the sound production is of great interest, i read above several people also talking about this kind of thing. is there a timetable/possibility?
Hi,
Is it possible to have support for VGA out to a projector?
That would be fantastic as I need to display this app on a projector for teaching purposes.
Thanks.
Maybe a bug maybe not. Downloaded ur app yesterday, very cool. It seems like yesterday the audio played through the main speakers on my iPhone 4 but today it is definately playing through the ear speaker. Weird.Bug or intentional?
Very nice app; well worth $2. I’d have paid $5 for it (for the iPad).
Suggestions:
Slower minimum bpm – I’d like to get down to 15 bpm at least. Better for meditation-style builds.
Per-ball source pitch shift controls.
Drums! Seriously. You so need them.
Quick undo/redo (a swipe gesture), stackable. I want to experiment without having to save all the time.
Loosen your endpoint tap detection a bit; it’s a wee bit hard to actually hit the ends reliably. (Of course, I have big fingers.)
A way to move a wall without tilting it. (Drag in the middle.)
Ability to change the color (sample type) of an existing wall. Perhaps hold to set to current color?
A way to set source bpm as a multiple or divisor of a base rate (first source?). Perhaps an optional “snap to” feature? And/or a way to set bpm precisely – 51 and 50 don’t sync up. Perhaps a “nudge” control of some sort. (Or let me type in a number – inelegant but functional.)
Ability to save *ball* configurations (i.e. a composition in flight). Once I start moving walls around dynamically, the result can’t be reproduced by saving just the sources and walls. I need those balls-in-flight to come back when I reload.
(Note: making walls transparent as long as I hold them is sheer genius. Don’t ever take that out.)
The save/load interface is… rudimentary. Implement iOS file sharing for importing and exporting save files and sample loops. Let me mail them around, and import save files from email. (Yes, this means you get to worry about save-file compatibility between iPad and iPhone. Do it.)
Ability to import ball-sound samples.
Put an iTunes-like visualizer behind the balls visuals. (Bad idea to compose, but great when you use VGA-out.)
If you want, make some of that the “superpro” version and charge me another $5. It’s worth it.
Feel free to drop me an email if you want to chat.
Great app. my 8 years old son thinks it’s the best (this week).
I paid for the upgrade to Pro via my iPhone. However, the Pro feature is not transferred to my iPad. Is this by design?
Hi, thank you for à fine product. I like it. I liked it so much so I upgraded to the pro version. I encountered two problems.
À. There is no connection with the Apple store.
B. There is an ad in THE lower part of THE screen.
I sent a bug report and suggestion in the app store before I saw this web page. I think you should have the lines where they could be normal lines or change between two instruments (it would change each time a ball hit it) and / or have the lines where they could blink on and off so you could get every other ball to hit them, or every third ball, etc.
You could bring up a menu when the line is tapped like you do on the ball droppers.
Just a thought, I also like the suggestions I’m seeing above from other people. This app just has so many things that you could do with it.
I use and enjoy soundrop pro on my iPhone, it’s a very nice app. I just bought an iPad and wish to transfer my soundrop pro to my iPad ( I prefer to use it on the iPad exclusively ). What do I need to do to accomplish this, and is it possible to transfer my currently saved songs as well ?
Please advise me.
I couldn’t find any forum or email address to get support so I posted here as it was the only place I could find.
Thank you for the quick response to let me know that,
“If you purchase the pro upgrade on your iPad with the same iTunes account used to purchase it before, you will not be charged a second time. Transferring songs however, is not possible yet.”
Posted it here because I thought it might help other people, I hope you don’t mind.
Thank you for this sort of a fantastic blog. Wherever else could one get this sort of facts written in this sort of an incite full way? I have a presentation that I am just now working on, and I were seeking these kinds of information.
This is *awesome*.

i really enjoy this little masterpiece. looking forward on any updates. just keep it simple as it is
I LOVE this app. I play it on the train to work and always gather a crowd. Suggestions…
Link pitch to length of line. A very short line a higher pitch and the longer the line the lower the pitch.
Color. Any way you want to do it but add colors.
Backgrounds that the user can pick from their photos.

Hey I’m really enjoying the app.
Saving and sharing a layout would be awesome features. Don’t mind paying, say, $.99 for a “Pro” version with these features.
Dunno about the other features that nicerobot is suggesting but if you can also implement those without sacrificing simplicity, then hey, go for it!

Cheers

Great app. my 8 years old son thinks it’s the best (this week).

What to do?
Thank you,
Beb.

I also bought the upgrade and it will not work on my iPad. I need a fix or a refund.

Dear Developer,
I use and enjoy soundrop pro on my iPhone, it’s a very nice app.
Thank you,
Awaiting your reply,
Roger
Thank you for the quick response to let me know that,
“If you purchase the pro upgrade on your iPad with the same iTunes account used to purchase it before, you will not be charged a second time. Transferring songs however, is not possible yet.”
Posted it here because I thought it might help other people, I hope you don’t mind.
+ Roger
Even tho I purchased the pro version, ads keep appearing. Boo. : (
